A taxi or cab (sometimes referred to as a minicab) derives from the word taxicab. The job of a taxicab is, as a form of public transport, to journey persons or person between their chosen destinations. The first horse drawn hackney carriages were in use in the early 1600's in London and the first petrol driven taxicabs were in use in 1903. Taxis are mainly cars, however in parts of the world boats (water taxis), animals and even human beings (rickshaws) are still the power behind taxicabs.

There are many names for taxicabs used today: taxis, cabs, minicabs, carriages and black cabs are frequently used in the UK today.
